The new Ford Edge. This is a terrific SUV to drive, whether on the highway, in town, with a large family group, or even by yourself, and I had the privilege to test it out recently. For 2008, Ford engineers have added a new power liftgate. Power liftgates are not new, but this is the first time it has made available on the Edge. My test drive model had it and it was so easy to operate, providing easy access to the rear cargo area with just a touch of the key fob. There are several styles and models of the Edge, but my test drive model was the Limited, 5 passenger, with automatic transmission. It was a Dark Blue Metallic with a Camel Leather interior.
The Edge is powered by a 3.5 liter V-6 engine. This V-6 engine features a lightweight but strong die-cast aluminum block and lightweight 4 valve per cylinder heads. It was matched to an automatic transmission with overdrive. The fuel tank held 19 gallons, which helped reduce the number of stops to fill-up. The Edge is rated at 16 mpg city and 24 mpg on the highway.
The Edge has a bold design, most notably by its distinctive three bar chrome front grill. The overall look is more American style than European, which seems to be becoming more popular. The wheels have been pushed out to the four corners of the vehicle, which gives in a more aggressive looking stance. The Edge sported dual chromed exhaust tips, fog lamps, and a body colored rear spoiler.
There is a large center console that uses a tray divider. The tray can be lifted out easily, but it helps to organize the space in holding laptops, MP3 players, or small items. The front seats were leather trimmed bucket style. The rear bench seat offered a 60-40 split with easyfold release.
Ford SYNC was available on my test drive model. This is Ford exclusive, which provides hands-free, voice-activated communications and entertainment. The system was designed by Microsoft and fully integrates cell phones, MP3 players, or even music on those little thumb drives plugged into an available USB port.
Added on as optional equipment to my test drive model was a Class II trailer tow package, the power liftgate, a great navigation system, roof rails, and a rear seat entertainment system complete with earphones and remote. I really like that towing package. If you don't have a pickup available, this great SUV can do most nominal towing jobs for you. Base MSRP for the Ford Edge Limited is $30,320. With the optional equipment and delivery charges, the bottom sticker price came to $35,490.
The Edge is adaptable and flexible. It has great driving dynamics. It delivers on the promise by Ford Motor Company to provide more vehicles that consumers want to buy. I certainly agree that this is one SUV that needs more attention. Check out the new Edge at your Ford dealership yourself. |
