09 Subaru Forester

As I was attending the various Press Conferences in Detroit, I mused over the number of vehicles being introduced as "new" that were really last year's model simply upgraded slightly.  No so with the folks from Subaru.  The Forester crossover for 2009 has been totally re-designed and is being referred to as the third generation of this popular vehicle

Subaru has built their reputation on safety, dependability, and versatility.  When I purchased a Subaru wagon back in the 70's, this was the message I received and it is still true today.    The engineers have taken the Forester and made in to look more like an SUV and added a significant number of safety improvements, more comfort, and better driving dynamics.

The Forester comes equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as a standard item.  This is true of all their vehicles, and Subaru is the only brand that quips all its model that way.  Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is made up of the aluminum Boxer engine and a full-time power distribution system.  A simple drivetrain layout helps to lower the center of gravity, and that helps handling.   There are two versions, one for manual transmission and the other for automatic.  Both integrate Vehicle Dynamics Control with the All-Wheel Drive to enhance traction and stability during inclement weather.

The 2009 Forrester has a longer wheelbase that improves rear seat legroom as well as improves the ride.  They have also added more hip room and shoulder space. The grill has been increased in size and the hood line was been raised up.  The contoured bumper covers along with the headlight arrangements gives it an over-all look referred to as "Hawk Eye."  I have a close friend who is quite an outdoorsman and he goes by the name of Hawkeye.  Both this redesigned SUV and my friend blend positive attitudes with a confident look.  I like to refer to both as having "character."

The new design of the Forrester also provides functional improvements.  For example, there is a much larger glass area in the rear tail gate.  This allows the average-sized driver to see a three foot tall test dummy set three feet behind the vehicle.

Inside the 2009 Forrester, Subaru engineers have placed a lot of emphasis on space and comfort.  This is not a luxury vehicle, but the new materials appear to be higher grade fabrics and plastics.  There is an abundance of technology, such as the first time a navigation system has been put in a Subaru.  There are inputs for MP3 players, video jacks for games, pre-wiring for XM or SIRIUS radio, and more.  The front seats are heated, the exterior mirrors are heated, and the Forrester is pre-wired for a remote starting system.  Some of these are options but many are standard features.  Tire pressure monitoring systems are standard on all models.

The new 2009 Forrester is expected to be available in late spring.  Check out the all-new design Crossover SUV at your Subaru dealership.  Find out why the Forrester keeps on winning awards for comfort, space, safety, and utility.
