2010 Kia Forte SX

Recently, I had a cute little vehicle for our test drive – the all-new Kia Forte.  Actually, it is a make-over of Kia’s volume seller Spectra.  The Spectra was okay, but the Kia engineers have really stepped up to the plate with this one.  They have not only changed the name, but made it a really good-looking little car with a great price.  This will probably become the bread-and-butter vehicle for the Kia line-up.

The test model was the SX model in a attractive color called Copperhead.  The interior was all black.  It came with a six speed manual transmission although I wish I could have tried out the automatic   There are three trim levels offered  -- the EX entry level, LX mid level, and the SX high end, which includes a ton of features and standard equipment.

The body shape of the Forte is much better than the bland Spectra.  The Forte has a flowing lines over the fenders and hood.  Actually, those front fenders have some pizzazz and an certain attractive flair. The appearance is much wider and lower.  The headlamps are swept back and blend with the front grill to give a very expressive look to the car.  It almost looks muscular.  First impression is positive.

The test model included power windows and locks, audio controls mounted on the steering wheel, remote key entry, and even heated leather seats.  The heated leather seats were an option at an additional charge.  Heated seats are definitely a favorite of mine.  The dashboard are had the anticipated items and the lighting on the gauges was red, which was somewhat attractive.  A powered sunroof was also included, but it was an optional feature.  The steering wheel was not one of those thin styles, but rather thick and easy to grip.  The interior was attractive, everything seemed to fit together nicely, and although it is an inexpensive car, it did not appear “cheesy.”  There was plenty of leg room for four passengers.  The trunk space was large enough to accommodate most personal cargo and more.

My test model was powered by a 2.4 liter, 16 valve, 4 cylinder engine that produces 173 hp.  There is also a 2.0 liter, 156 hp engine available. It had all the pep needed for everyday driving.  It did not anticipate it being a race car, but it did deliver a great deal of driving satisfaction.  It had normal acceleration and the steering responded well.  The four cylinder engine was matched with a six speed manual but I think I would have preferred a four or five speed automatic.  The shifting was not quite as smooth as I prefer, but it did accomplish the mission to move the car along the roadway.

Pricing is great, with low-end models in the $14,000 range.  My test model was the high-end SX and the base MSRP was still only $17,195.  With delivery charges, the leather seats, and the moonroof added on, the sticker still only totaled $19,490.  EPA ratings are 32 mpg on the highway and the expected range for most drivers will be 26 to 38 mpg.

Bottom line – I like the new Forte.  I think Kia has a hit on their hands with this one.  It is definitely inexpensive, it offers a lot more styling, and has great fuel mileage.   It is obvious that Kia is taking direct aim at Honda and Toyota.  With the change of name and the improved quality, it appears this is a turnaround for the Kia vehicles and deserves at least a trip into a Kia dealership for a look-over.
